Hommage to Rosa Parks

I started this project by making a selection of nine photographs of Rosa Parks at a different age. Photographs distinctly emerging her charisma, which I described in my accompanying text.

I then edited these photographs. I isolated Rosa Parks from the background and gradually transformed her image into a kind of stencil style to best reflect her appearance. Then I made a final selection of three images.

I transferred these images onto canvas in center, right and left position, elaborated her portraits, and set individual color accents.

At the same time, I chose three statements from Rosa Parks I consider as important for the development of our society. In a final step, I painted these statements on the canvas as single letters and words.

I worked out the images and statements of Rosa Parks with fine acrylic pencils, which led to thousands of individual strokes per canvas and to an inflammation of my right wrist and elbow.

In Search Of

The Fibonacci Sequence – especially from a philosophical point of view – forms the basis of the three series in this cycle.

In a first step, I delved into the mathematical functions and properties of this infinite sequence of natural numbers. From the definition of the Fibonacci sequence itself, through the relationships between its sequence links, to the irrational number Phi.

The sequence can also be found in algebraic and geometric split ratios in our nature. Occasionally, plants arrange their leaves and blossoms in the Golden Angle in order to make the best possible use of the incoming sunlight and the accompanying photosynthesis. Another example is the shell of the nautilus, which is constructed along the Golden Spiral.

I could roughly summarize the questions that I asked myself and I meditated on like this:

What does Phi mean as one of the most irrational numbers on a meta level in relation to us as individuals, to us individuals as part of our society as well as to us individuals and our society as part of the world we know.

I have implemented the work of this cycle in a limited edition using screen printing technology. The colors used are based on the collection of over 300 color combinations developed by the Japanese avant-garde artist Sanzo Wada.

Gimmick of the Fibonacci Sequence in Sudokus

Gimmick of the Fibonacci Sequence in Sudokus

Do you like to play with numbers? Are you a person who loves to figure out the correct order?

Then this blog article is for you. Based on my designs for the cycle “In Search Of” and on the Fibonacci sequence itself, I have worked out these three sudokus for you.

The sudokus are “hard” on level and include the classic form, the free-form and the diagonal form.

I cordially invite you to save the sudokus as an image and I hope you enjoy solving them.

All Things Are

All Things Are

In this cycle I immersed myself in the Buddhist teachings again. I dealt with impermanence, transition and the inner essence.

At the same time, the Japanese aesthetics of Wabi-Sabi had a major impact on these six works. I asked myself: What is my idea of beauty? Does beauty express itself in flawlessness or rather in imperfection? When and how is beauty emerging? How do things in our world relate to each other, what ambiguities and contradictions do they unite?

I based my intuitive implementation of this immersion and of the questions answered on byōbu (Japanese folding screens) and have reinterpreted this old Japanese art form. The square-shaped, golden primer takes up the teaching brought into the picture, framed by a white linen ribbon. The back is papered with Japanese design paper. Finally, the overall work is surrounded by a frame.

hau’oli ke ola – Hawai’ian Hula

hau'oli ke ola - Hawai'ian Hula - Screen Printing of the Translation
hau'oli ke ola - Hawai'ian Hula
hau'oli ke ola - Hawai'ian Hula - Result of the Screen Printing

I have been meditating for a long time on the individual movements of this hula that I had learned shortly before.

Enjoying life. The sun is rising. The palm tree is waving in the wind. Gentle waves are rolling. We pick flowers. The clouds are passing.

The moon is rising. The stars are moving in the sky. The Hawai’ian man, the Hawai’ian woman, hug each other. The wind is wafting them.

How the meaning expressed in each movement of arms and legs could be translated symbolically into an integral construct rather than in a sequence; a construct in which they are connected with each other.

In the first part of the hula the sun rises and in the second part the moon rises. This can happen successively within one day in one place as well as in different places at the same time. So I designed a single entity in the form of our globe with the sun on one side and the moon on the other, still being connected in their cycle.

I chose the screen printing technique for the realization of the project. The graphic appears in the raised screen frame. Every single time after I squeegeed the colour over the frame, folded it back, and saw the paper, I was filled with satisfaction and was pleased with the result that presented itself. A hula of movements with symbolism brought into colour.
