hau'oli ke ola - Hawai'ian Hula - Result of the Screen Printing

I have been meditating for a long time on the individual movements of this hula that I had learned shortly before.

Enjoying life. The sun is rising. The palm tree is waving in the wind. Gentle waves are rolling. We pick flowers. The clouds are passing.

The moon is rising. The stars are moving in the sky. The Hawai’ian man, the Hawai’ian woman, hug each other. The wind is wafting them.

How the meaning expressed in each movement of arms and legs could be translated symbolically into an integral construct rather than in a sequence; a construct in which they are connected with each other.

In the first part of the hula the sun rises and in the second part the moon rises. This can happen successively within one day in one place as well as in different places at the same time. So I designed a single entity in the form of our globe with the sun on one side and the moon on the other, still being connected in their cycle.

I chose the screen printing technique for the realization of the project. The graphic appears in the raised screen frame. Every single time after I squeegeed the colour over the frame, folded it back, and saw the paper, I was filled with satisfaction and was pleased with the result that presented itself. A hula of movements with symbolism brought into colour.
