Story of the Work
This work represents the love between M* and me, two people of different skin color, who both grew up in completely different cultural backgrounds, have different family histories, speak a different mother tongue and are very different in character.
M* has frizzy, dark brown hair and the color of his skin is “black”. I have fine, blonde hair and the color of my skin is “white”. M* grew up in Guadeloupe and comes from a family of Arawak (natives of the Antilles) and of slaves kidnapped from Africa. I grew up under the dictatorship of the former GDR and later in Switzerland and come from a family of Germans and Czechs. M* speaks Creole and French, I speak German, English and a little bit of French.
“Different”. But we are just two individuals who have feelings, like every other human being in this world. We suffer, we cry, we feel joy, we laugh. At the same time we are connected to each other by a strong energy deep inside of us. In this energy of love, our differences in the form of a conflictual element become less and less important.
Love works like a strong attraction between the two of us and wants us to connect, to create harmony. When we chafe at each other occasionally, it lets us find common ground over and over again.
In this connection there is a force, an energy, in which lies a great tenderness and which pulsates at the same time. It gives us wings. It causes us to open up an abundance of new perspectives, new connections and combinations, precisely on the basis of our differences. We grow together, inspire each other, create together.
Artistic Approach
For this work I have chosen a representation in the form of a tetraptych, as can be found in folding winged altars.
In the middle element we are united in an intimate, tender embrace. The choice of colors from white through various shades of gray to black represents the contrast of our respective skin color. By reducing them to a few colors and finding these colors again in the other, I have at the same time created something in common, a bond between us.
The left and right elements contain us as a respective individual. The background color relates to our family ancestry. Roucou was used by the Arawak as body paint, among other things. I made a paste from the seeds of the fruit and based on this an acrylic paint. The Celts and Germanic tribes in Central Europe used blue as body paint. Since I had no access to woad due to the current Covid pandemic, I used ultramarine oxide as a color pigment, which I then transformed into a warmer shade.
The element in the upper part of the tetraptych finally reflects what we create together with our connection and our differences.
I did not subdivide the four individual elements into strictly geometric, repetitive shapes, but instead followed the movement of our bodies in the center. In this way I gave each element its individual shape.
