Artistic Approach
I designed the background of these works in a style I have seen on old folding screens in Japanese castles. The background, in different shades of gold, was not always applied evenly, but in small consecutive squares. I reproduced this effect by using the brush to create horizontal and vertical strokes in the individual squares.
Story of the Works „In the Morning“
This cycle should spread a good mood and make you smile.
What sounds do I hear every morning when I wake up in Guadeloupe with the rising sun shining through the window around six o‘clock? I hear the leaves rustling on the coconut palm in front of the house, how the leaves gently brush over the roof. I hear the wild chickens, the roosters crow, the chirping of the little ones running after their mother. Or I hear the neighbor’s goats, who are already talking to each other.
I make us a coffee, sit down on the terrace, look into our garden and slowly wake up as a typical morning grouch. My partner wakes up much faster, but gives me my time and only speaks to me when I’ve had my second coffee.
I reproduced this atmosphere in these two works. The golden background reflects the warm light of the morning. In the lower part of the works there are two beings who are physically and energetically connected. In one work, they touch each other tenderly back to back, each contemplating the new day a little introspectively. In the other picture, the two beings face each other, look lovingly into each other’s eyes and greet the new day.
Story of the Works „In the Evening“
… and what noises do I hear in the evenings? I hear the crickets chirping, the frogs making music, and I’m talking about really small frogs that, despite their size, make incredibly strong music. Later, our she-dogs talk to all the dogs in the neighborhood, which sometimes happens to be very loud and passionate. Large butterflies of the night and a number of small lizards surround a lamp for chasing small insects. A neighbor gives a small private concert on his saxophone.
The light takes on a bronze tone and depending on the evening the atmosphere is calm or festive. The two creatures meet, talk about their day, enjoy being together, maybe drink a Ti-Punch depending on the day of the week and philosophize about life and other little things. Or they were missing each other after a long day, kissing tenderly and being happy to be together.
